POLITICIANS FROM SOUTH TERRORIZE INNOCENT MUSLIM FARMERS IN AMPARA.

The Muslim Farmers who cultivate Paddy on the borders of Lahugala, in the District of Ampara, for over 25 years, had made representations to M. T. Hasen Ali MP, Deputy Minister Supplementary Plantation Crops Development, Secretary General, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and to other Muslim Ministers of the East, that, two Ministers from South had come all the way from Colombo to Ampara District, and had set their foot on their Paddy Lands by force and had erected Sign Boards to the effect that their age old Paddy Fields are Forests Lands, hence, threatening the Muslim Farmers not to do any cultivation henceforth, if not face dire consequences.

Woes of the Farmers of Akkaraipattu

The Farmer community of Akkaraipattu has for generations been cultivating their fields at Vattamadu, Muranavatri, Pottana, Kokkuluwa and Vattamadu South. According to U.L. Uwais, a leading social worker from Akkaraipattu over 1000 families of Akkaraipattu make up this farming community. These fields are approximately 12kms away from the town and are considered to be some of the most fertile lands in the Ampara district. Unfortunately the government security forces are not allowing these farmers to visit or to attend to these lands.

At a time when efforts are underway to weaken the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress over the Puttalam incident which took place recently, it is necessary to ascertain the truth and motive behind this unfortunate incident.  In this background, majority of the people expect that it is the party that should take precedence over the soil and not the vice-versa.  If it is the soil that should be behind the party, there would not be any problem like Puttalam or Vanni, observed Posts and Telecommunications Miniter Rauff Hakeem at a  party meetings held at Puttalam last Sunday.
